Raman Scattering from Frustrated Quantum Spin Chains
نویسنده
چکیده
Magnetic Raman scattering from a frustrated spin–1/2 Heisenberg–chain is considered with a focus on the uniform phase of the spin–Peierls compound CuGeO3. The Raman intensity is analyzed in terms of a Loudon–Fleury scattering process using a spinless–fermion mean–field theory developed for the frustrated spin–chain. A comparison to experimental data is presented and the frustration and temperature dependence is studied. In good agreement with observed spectra a broad inelastic four–spinon continuum is found at low temperatures above the spin–Peierls transition. At high temperatures the intensity develops a quasi–elastic line analogous to experiment. PACS: 75.10.Jm, 75.40.Gb, 78.30.-j Typeset using REVTEX 1

Transport in quasi one-dimensional spin-1/2 systems
We present numerical results for the spin and thermal conductivity of one-dimensional (1D) quantum spin systems. We contrast the properties of integrable models such as the spin-1/2 XXZ chain against nonintegrable ones such as frustrated and dimerized chains. The thermal conductivity of the XXZ chain is ballistic at finite temperatures, while in the nonintegrable models, this quantity is argued...
متن کاملFirst Order Transition in the Frustrated Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg S=1 Quantum Spin Chain.
We study a frustrated Heisenberg S 1 quantum spin chain with next-nearest neighbor (NNN) coupling a using a variational ansatz and the density matrix renormalization group. We find as quantum remnants of the phase transition in the classical chain a disorder point at a D 0.284͑1͒ and a Lifshitz point at a L 0.3725͑25͒. Our main finding is a first-order transition from an Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-...
متن کاملGround-State Phase Diagram of Frustrated Anisotropic Quantum Spin Chains
The low-energy properties of one-dimensional quantum spin systems with frustrating interactions have been studied extensively for many years. This is mainly because they exhibit a variety of ground-state phases accompanied with various types of spontaneous symmetry breaking, e.g., the dimer phase with the translational symmetry breaking. More recently novel phases have been found in the ground ...
متن کاملSpin-flip and acoustic-phonon Raman scattering in CdS nanocrystals
We report on spin-flip Raman scattering and on Raman scattering by acoustic phonons in CdS nanocrystals embedded in a glass matrix. We discuss both the spin-flip and the acoustic-phonon Raman spectra on the basis of the interaction of size-quantized electronic excitations with nonconfined acoustic vibrations. The polarization of spin-flip Raman scattering in the Faraday and Voigt configurations...
متن کاملTrapped-ion quantum simulation of tunable-range Heisenberg chains
Quantum-optical techniques allow for generating controllable spin-spin interactions between ions, making trapped ions an ideal quantum simulator of Heisenberg chains. A single parameter, the detuning of the Raman coupling, allows to switch between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic chains, and to modify the range of the interactions. On the antiferromagnetic side, the system can be tuned from ...
